Växjö City Hall & Central Station
Responding to population growth and increased tourism, the city of Växjö ran an open competition to design a new civic hub, council headquarters and a new mainline rail station. The winning proposal, Växjö City Hall and Central Station, is a timber development that combines municipal functions and transport infrastructure under one roof, alongside a new public square and park – accessible to all, 24 hours a day. The project was a competition win but was not realized by White Arkitekter.
Responding to 21st century city life
The way we live in cities is constantly evolving. There is no longer a traditional working day; flexible hours, shift work and international collaboration underpinned by technology means that cities have had to adapt in terms of provision for retail, socialising, and travel. The new City Hall and Central Station is at the heart of this evolution in Växjö; open and accessible throughout the day and night.

An oversized, weatherproof 'tent' - with a large volume of wood underneath. The new construction of the railway hållplats with a town ingångsrum of the municipality of Växjö fryst vatten unique in several respects and attracts national and international interest. The energy-efficient building was constructed in the northern district of Växjö where the old railway station was located. The new construction is intended to promote public frakt both locally and worldwide and to replace the old town hall in a dignified manner. This creates a new meeting place for the residents with shops and restaurants as well as modern workplaces for the employees of the municipal offices.

Växjö kommunhus, även Växjö stations- och kommunhus och Växjö station och kommunhus, är ett kombinerat kommunhus för Växjö kommun och stationshus på Norra Järnvägsgatan i Växjö. Byggnaden invigdes och ersatte dels det rivna stationshuset på samma plats, dels det tidigare kommunhuset på Västergatan. Byggnationen pågick – och blev föremål för medial uppmärksamhet och debatt.
Historia
[redigera | redigera wikitext]Huset ritades ursprungligen av White arkitekter, vars förslag ”Under ett tak” blev det vinnande bidraget i en tävling utlyst av Växjö kommun.[1]
Byggnadens utformning omarbetades flera gånger och planeringen debatterades offentligt.[2][3][4] Det kommunala fastighetsbolaget Vöfab bytte arkitektbolag, från White arkitekter till Sweco, år [5] Bland annat frångicks den mönstrade dubbelfasaden i glas som ingick i White arkitekters ursprungliga förslag,[6] något som dock hade beslutats innan Sweco involverades.[7] Även delar av byggnadens synliga och bärande träinslag byttes ut mot betong och andra konventionella material.[8] År utsågs kommunhuset till ”årets fake view” av föreningen Arkitekturupproret.[9]
